During Lent in Kalambaka, the custom of the Veneration of the Cross is revived. Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross is a special day on which, after the Doxology during Matins, the Cross is carried in procession to the center of the church, where it remains for the entire week. At the end of each service, the faithful venerate the Cross. At the same time, women climb the rock of Mikri Aia, singing the well-known Easter songs. They then descend to the small church of Saint Anthony, dancing and singing traditional Easter songs. When the bell of the Great Church rings, as they call the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, they gather to attend Vespers, keeping the religious traditions alive.
