In Leonidio, the capital of Tsakonia, on Holy Saturday every year the impressive custom of launching hot air balloons is revived. This tradition has deep roots in the area and attracts many visitors. The glowing balloons in Leonidio have become a trademark of the village and an important tourist attraction, highlighting the local tradition and the uniqueness of the custom. As Dimitris Psathas used to say, “Carnival in Patras and Easter in Leonidio,” emphasizing the importance of these customs.

The hot air balloons first appeared in Leonidio around 1910 and have been linked to the maritime and commercial relations of the Tsakonians, mainly with Constantinople and Piraeus. Although the exact origin of the custom remains unclear, it is certain that the tradition has been fully integrated into local life and culture. Today, the balloon ceremony continues to enchant visitors, offering an unforgettable experience during the Resurrection, when the bright balloons light up the village’s night sky.
