In Zakynthos, the Epitaphios service is followed by a unique custom, as it does not take place on the evening of Good Friday, but in the early hours of Holy Saturday, around 2:00 in the morning. The procession begins from the Metropolitan Church of Saint Nicholas of the Foreigners, while the philharmonic band plays “Ina ti?” and the crowd follows the Epitaphios until around 5:30 in the morning, when it returns to the church for the service to continue. The Epitaphios is not decorated with flowers, but with red velvet and gold leaf.

The custom of Zakynthos also includes the First Resurrection, when the “Gloria,” also known as the “kommati,” takes place, during which housewives break clay pots and jugs. It is a distinctive traditional custom that brings a unique atmosphere to the area. The Midnight Epitaphios of Zakynthos stands out as the only one in all of Greece that is carried in procession during the early hours of Holy Saturday, giving the city a special religious and cultural identity during Holy Week.
