The Rocket War in Chios

The Rocket War in Chios is an impressive and traditional custom that takes place every Easter, mainly in Vrontados. On Holy Saturday, the parishes of Saint Mark and Panagia Erythiani launch thousands of handmade rockets, aiming at each other’s church bell towers. The nighttime spectacle is explosive and full of energy. The churches are about 400 meters apart, and the next day the hits are counted to determine which parish has won, although both parishes always declare themselves the winners.

The Rocket War in Vrontados is connected with the period of Ottoman rule. When the Turks banned the use of cannons, the island’s residents responded with handmade rockets. The custom of the “Chios Rocket War” has been preserved consistently to this day, although there have been objections to its continuation due to incidents of injuries and damage. Nevertheless, the tradition continues with increased safety measures, offering visitors a unique experience every year.
