The Fires of Florina are the most characteristic Christmas custom of the region, attracting many visitors from all over Greece. Every year, on the night of December 23, fires are lit in every neighborhood of the city, with the largest one located in Heroes’ Square near the Sakoulevas River. The light from the dozens of fires is reflected in the waters of the river, creating an impressive sight.

The custom of Florina has its roots in ancient pagan celebrations and is connected with fertility and fruitfulness, while for many it is also associated with the winter solstice and the rebirth of nature. During the lighting of the fires in Florina, the residents, especially the children, make sure to feed the fires with cedar branches and wood they have gathered from the mountains in the previous days. The custom has remained unchanged over the years, while in modern times it is accompanied by bands with brass instruments playing traditional tunes. In the central square, the municipality offers free food and wine to all visitors, creating a magical Christmas atmosphere in Florina.
